Course Overview:
450 Old Highway 431, Owens Crossroads, Alabama  35763
Par: 72  Yardage: 7438  Slope: 136  Rating: 75.5

The Highlands Course at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama offers a distinctly different experience from many other courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Unlike the flatter, more open River Course at the same facility, the Highlands Course takes full advantage of the natural Appalachian foothills, weaving through rolling terrain, mature hardwood forests, and elevated ridgelines that create one of the most visually impressive rounds on the RTJ Trail.

Designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course features dramatic elevation changes that influence nearly every shot. Fairways rise and fall through the landscape, demanding careful club selection and rewarding players who can shape shots and manage uneven lies. The tree-lined corridors create a more traditional parkland feel, while strategically placed bunkers and large undulating greens add another layer of difficulty around the putting surfaces.

One of the most distinctive features of Hampton Cove is the historic Hampton Cove Mule Barn, a beautifully preserved structure that serves as a centerpiece of the property and reflects the area’s farming heritage. The barn adds unique Southern character to the facility and has become one of the most photographed landmarks anywhere along the RTJ Trail.

The Highlands Course is known for requiring precision rather than sheer power, making accuracy off the tee and strong iron play essential for scoring well. Multiple tee boxes allow golfers of varying skill levels to enjoy the layout, though the course can become a stern championship test from the back tees. Several holes offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, particularly during the fall when the foliage transforms the property into one of Alabama’s most scenic golf destinations.

Consistently praised for its conditioning, natural beauty, and thoughtful design, the Highlands Course delivers a memorable golf experience that blends strategic play with stunning scenery. Combined with Hampton Cove’s excellent practice facilities, historic atmosphere, and proximity to Huntsville’s dining, entertainment, and outdoor attractions, the Highlands Course stands out as one of the premier golf destinations in northern Alabama.
